HARRIS COUNTY WARNS AGAINST UNAUTHORIZED DUMPSITES AFTER FLOODING FROM HURRICANE HARVEY
Harris County strongly urges residents to avoid creating debris stockpile sites in their neighborhoods (i.e. parking lots, medians, community centers, etc.). Unincorporated Harris County residents are encouraged to wait for County debris haulers to remove debris from the right-of-way in front of their homes. Harris County debris contractors are only collecting debris from sites located in County right-of-way. Please call the Harris County Residential Debris and Damage Assessment Hotline at 713-274-3880 or email Homeflooding@hcpid.org for additional information on debris removal.
Unauthorized dumpsites impose risk upon the neighboring community and property owners by creating the potential for nuisance odors, fire risk and a threat to human health and safety by providing breeding ground for rats, mice and mosquitos.
The creation of unauthorized dumpsites will result in debris not being collected and hauled away by Harris County debris contractors. This would also result in the property owner where the debris is dumped, owning the responsibility for the transfer of debris to the proper municipal landfill and all associated fees. Once Hurricane Harvey recovery is concluded, waste regulations will be enforced on any unauthorized disposal sites and fines may be assessed. Therefore, it is best to wait for the County debris contractors to collect debris material from the homes in your neighborhood.
